The Accounting Roadblock to Growth

“Accounting has been something top of mind since day one,” recalls Katherine, co-founder of Maze. “It is a core challenge for every business.”

As a Shopify agency, Maze helps Canadian merchants—many transitioning from traditional business models with pen-and-paper operations—embrace ecommerce as a primary sales channel. Their clients, ranging from $1M to $10M GMV, often lack dedicated ecommerce teams, making streamlined processes essential.

But accounting was always the sticking point. Maze’s clients faced increasingly complex challenges:

  • B2B customers needing different workflows than B2C (sales receipts vs invoices with payment terms)
  • Order modifications creating sync nightmares (forgotten discount codes, size changes, refunds)
  • “Black box” integrations that offered no visibility or reliability

Katherine put it bluntly:

MyWorks Customer Story

“Accounting is too important to mess up. If it’s wrong once, it keeps carrying over like a math mistake. We needed a solution we could set up properly, then trust to run in the background.”

Alternative approaches proved costly and inefficient. A Make-based custom integration took two months to build and cost nearly $1,000 per month in processing fees. “It was a real headache,” Katherine recalls. “We had to chat with Make, chat with QuickBooks… it took us two months just to get anything to process.”

The Right Integration at the Right Time

Maze discovered MyWorks during its annual tech stack review. What stood out:

  • Built for Shopify — MyWorks is the only accounting integration carrying the Built for Shopify badge, giving Maze confidence to recommend it to clients.

“As an agency, our clients trust us as their advisers. We have the responsibility to make good choices on their behalf. We don’t add a lot of new apps to our tech stack unless that app has been really vetted.”

  • Real-time, two-way sync — Orders, refunds, and inventory stay accurate across Shopify and QuickBooks, eliminating the constant “babysitting” required with other solutions.

“With a lot of other integrations, you have to go in quite regularly and check up on it. Oh, I have fifty orders that haven’t been processed because you’re missing a sync with taxes. I’m like, ‘I have a full-time job already. I do not want to go back into that QuickBooks integration and manually sync all these orders.'”

  • Flexible workflows — MyWorks supports sales receipts, invoices, estimates, daily summaries, and even a combination of individual order and summary syncing. Thus, Maze’s B2C and B2B clients can manage their unique payment terms seamlessly.

“As soon as someone has B2C and B2B type clients using the same website to make purchases online, you have an issue. B2C clients prepay with credit cards, while B2B orders have terms like Net 30 or Net 60. You need to accommodate both.”

  • Quick setup — Katherine set up her first client’s MyWorks integration in under 60 minutes, compared to 80 hours spent on manual solutions.

“With Make, we invested about ten hours a week for about eight weeks. That’s eighty hours to set up Make. And at that point, it was set up, but it wasn’t working. With MyWorks, it took us an hour. You’re saving us seventy-nine hours from setup alone.”

 She explains:

“With MyWorks, accounting goes from being a constant babysitting job to something you barely think about—because it just works.”

Results – Time Saved, Costs Reduced, Confidence Gained

With MyWorks, Maze delivers consistency and reliability to its clients:

  • 79+ hours saved per setup compared to DIY integrations
  • 20% efficiency gains on ongoing accounting processes
  • Cost savings: from ~$1,000/month using Make to just $99/month or less with MyWorks
  • Quick start: Accurate syncing configured and deployed in under 60 min
  • Scalability: Works equally well for small Shopify stores and Shopify Plus wholesale clients

Clients no longer lose time manually fixing sync issues, and Maze can focus on higher-value work—UX design, CRO, and scaling stores—instead of babysitting accounting systems.

“When that client with Make stopped using it, I think our monthly invoice was around a thousand dollars. If we were to use MyWorks today, it would be top tier—$99, but that would be it,” Katherine explains.

Beyond just cost savings, MyWorks has transformed how Maze approaches accounting for its clients.

Katherine sums it up:

MyWorks Customer Story

“For the clients with which we’ve set up MyWorks, we’re actually working on other stuff. We’re out of the gutter of accounting. Accounting is accounted for. It’s set up. It’s working, and then we can work on building cool features and scaling their online store.

….When I don’t have to think about MyWorks, that’s when I know it’s working. Syncing just happens in the background, and our clients can focus on selling.”

And on MyWorks as a partner:

“It feels safe and secure, but also warm and approachable. Not like a cold corporate tool. We know we can talk to real people when it matters—and that’s priceless.”
